José Carlos Pita López

José Carlos Pita López (Neda – 1940)

José Carlos started working in Ferrol’s shipyards at an early age as a technician for Astano. Driven by the desire to help and improve the workers’ conditions, he joined the Comisiones Obreras trade union. This led him to become a member of the Galician Communist Party (PCG). In 1979, he was elected mayor in representation of the Independent Democratic Group for Neda, the first mayor of the municipality following the arrival of democracy. He remained in office until 2007.

With an ongoing interest in social affairs, culture and the protection of local history, he is one of the precursors of the English Way, not only in the municipality, but along the entire route from Ferrol to Santiago. He also promoted the construction of the town’s pilgrims’ hostel, and at the age of 83, he continues to work there as a volunteer.
