Maruja Varela

Maruja da Tahona (Agolada, 1946) The daughter of farmers Asunción y José, she went to Melide while still very young to work as a seamstress, going from house to house.

Later she joined the Casa de la Tahona, a well-known local confectionery, where she met her husband Manolo. They spent a happy but very busy life working together, making delicious melindres, sponge cakes and a wide range of delicacies to sweeten other people’s lives.

A few years ago, when the time came to rest, she handed over the reins to the next generation.
